ALL YOU NEED TO BECOME A SHIRODHARA THERAPIST
QWhat is shirodhara therapy? I've seen it on several spa menus lately, and it sounds so
exotic.
char says, “Shirodhara is a profound, mindmelting treatment using ayurvedic oils poured in a steady stream over the forehead and scalp typicallyfollowed by massage. In Sanskrit, ‘shiro’ means
head and ‘dhara’ means flowing like a thread.“From a small copper pot, warm oil flows on the brow and in the region between the eyes. It cleans both the mind and the senses, which allows the body’s natural healing mechanisms to release stress from the nervous system. This, in turn, improves mental clarity and comprehension. Char says those who practice shirodhara believe it heightens the senses, stimulates the chakras which regulate breathing, contributes to facial rejuvenation, smoothes fine lines, and relaxes the mind and nervous system. The Shirodhara treatment is available through practitioners and spas nationwide.

OILS TO USE
Sesame oil is the traditional oil used for Shirodhara. Other oils or liquids, such as coconut oil, olive oil, milk or even buttermilk, are sometimes used as well. For example, coconut oil has a more cooling effect than sesame oil. So someone with a lot of Pitta or excess heat in their system might benefit more from a Shirodhara that used coconut oil. Milk Shirodharas are also very cooling and are especially beneficial in the summer time. If you do not have adequate training to determine which oil or liquid is most appropriate for a particular client, then we recommend using a cold-pressed, sesame oil.
AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE -Cold pressed pure sesame oil, 2 litres for $35.00 (incredible value). You can customized the base sesame oil by adding the clients preferred essential oils. Sesame oil is appropriate for all doshas (constitution).

Massage table
Oil heater
Thermometer

PRACTICAL TIPS
Provide adequate neck and back support for your clients
-Conduct the treatment in silence
-Make certain the room is warm and quiet
-Maintain oil temperature between 95-100 degree Fahrenheit;
-When finished, wrap a scarf or towel around head to keep warm. Leave on for at least 30 minutes. -Wash hair as normal when done.
-The stream of oil should be thick and heavy, not thin and light
-Use a copper bowl if available as this balancing for all three doshas: vata, pitta, kapha (copper is most effective for vata imbalances which is the cause of imbalance for many Westerners)
-Maintain a continuous stream of oil (don’t stop and start)
-Move the oil across the forehead (not just on the third eye)
-Protect your floor, neck cradle and massage table from oil splashes.
Instead of discarding the used oil, give the oil to the client for self-massage at home. Get hands-on training and practice on family and friends until you can perform the treatment seamlessly.
